Il Piccolo Marat

l piccolo Marat is a three-act opera composed by Pietro Mascagni, with a libretto by Giovacchino Forzano. Premiered in Rome in 1921, the story takes place in France during the Reign of Terror, when revolutionary authorities imprisoned and executed suspected enemies of the new regime.

A young aristocrat, Prince Jean-Charles de Fleury, disguises himself as a revolutionary guard known as “the Little Marat.” His real purpose is to enter the prison controlled by the brutal revolutionary leader L’Orco and rescue his mother, the Princess de Fleury. While maintaining his disguise, Jean-Charles meets Mariella, L’Orco’s compassionate niece, and gradually falls in love with her.

Jean-Charles discovers that L’Orco plans to place the prisoners aboard a boat and deliberately sink it at sea. With help from Mariella and a frightened carpenter who owns a boat, Jean-Charles begins organizing an escape. He secretly steals official documents and persuades Mariella to help him create safe-conduct papers for his mother and their companions.

During the final confrontation, Jean-Charles and Mariella tie L’Orco to his bed and force him to authorize their escape. L’Orco manages to obtain a pistol and shoots Jean-Charles, but Mariella successfully frees the Princess and leads her toward the waiting boat. The carpenter arrives and kills L’Orco, then helps the wounded prince escape.

At its heart, Il piccolo Marat is a dramatic story of courage, sacrifice and love under political oppression. Jean-Charles risks his life to save his mother, while Mariella and the carpenter overcome fear and divided loyalties to resist cruelty and injustice.
